Before writing for that grant for your pastor or any other grant in fact, take time to plan accordingly – it will save you a lot of time in the long run.
So many people fail to take time out to plan accordingly when writing for grants. There are three specific questions you should ask yourself before the pen ever hits the paper or in today’s day age…the fingers hit the keys.
Is this foundation a good match for what we do?
To many organizations try to force fit what they do into the requirements of a foundation. If your mission or project does not fit--- do not apply. You are only wasting your time and the time of the foundation. They receive plenty of good proposals from ministries that are a good fit…and the chances of them making an exception for you is slim to none.
Is the foundation accepting applications?
Please be sure you read carefully the guidelines of the foundation to be sure they are accepting applications. Once again, please do not think they are going to make an exception for your organization. They receive more requests than they can ever fund.
Does the foundation give many grants?
If the foundation lists that they only give a handful of grants away I would not waste your time trying to be one of just a very few. Look for foundations that like to give a lot of grants to many different organizations...this will greatly increase your chances of being successful.
